Duerson's Kin Donating His Brain for Research
The family of former Bears safety Dave Duerson has agreed to donate his brain for research into chronic traumatic encephalopathy, a condition linked to athletes who have sustained repeated concussions.

Chris Nowinski at the Center for the Study of Traumatic Encephalopathy at Boston University School of Medicine told The Associated Press he was contacted by a representative of the NFL Players Association on Friday, then worked with a representative of Duerson's family.

"I can confirm that Mr. Duerson's family has agreed to donate his brain to the CSTE at BU School of Medicine," Nowinski said in an e-mail.

Duerson died Thursday in Sunny Isles Beach, Fla. The Miami-Dade medical examiner ruled the death a suicide, Miami-Dade police spokesman Roy Rutland said Sunday. He confirmed that a gun was used but did not specify where Duerson shot himself.

It's unclear why Duerson killed himself, although his company had been forced into receivership several years ago and he had lost his home to foreclosure, former Bears coach Mike Ditka told the AP in a phone interview Sunday.

Twitter suspends some apps

Twitter suspends some apps
Guess what? Twitter didn’t have to turn off the Twitter apps for millions of users by childishly pulling the plug on UberTwitter and Twidroyd.  But they did. Am I surprised? Not in the least. And then Twitter followed up by delaying for many hours the reactivation of those apps for users. The minor issues with the apps that caused Twitter to turn them off—throwing users into a panic—were fixed quickly, as this tweet points out. Yet Twitter did not restore them, still has not restored them.

While these actions look like disdain for users, I know it’s just corporate immaturity on Twitter’s part. Twitter has a track record of acting first, thinking later—and breaking things. They had options besides disconnecting users without warning, of course. They could have tweeted a public warning, for example.

Lady Gaga picks actress to play her in biopic

Lady Gaga
Lady Gaga would love to see Marisa Tomei play her in a biopic because she has a lot of the same traits as the actress. The Poker Face hitmaker is convinced The Wrestler star would be the ideal person to portray her if her life was ever made into a movie, as both of the New York-natives have a fiery attitude. She tells Sirius XM radio station, "Oh, you know what, I would have Marisa Tomei play me. I am such a Marisa Tomei fan. All my friends call me Marisa when I get angry. Because my New York accent just flies out of my body and I start smacking my gum."

And Gaga admits she would love to test her own acting skills in a movie one day: "I think at some point, yes. I think I'm sort of destined for that screen at some point."

Daytona 500 lines up

The 2011 Daytona 500 starting lineup is ready for the big race Sunday. There were changes to the 2011 Daytona 500 starting lineup though, especially after Dale Earnhardt Jr. wrecked during practice with teammate Jimmy Johnson earlier in the week. While on a practice lap, Earnhardt had to slam on the breaks to avoid Johnson, who was trying to get around cars that had slowed down in front of him. Earnhardt ended up getting hit from behind by another racer, sending him into the infield wall and ripping a chunk off of his car.
Up to that point Earnhardt had taken the pole position to the race, posting the best qualifying time of a deep field. Because he wrecked his primary car and has to go with a backup car, it meant that Earnhardt will have to start at the back of the back on Sunday. That was something that might seem unfair to fans of Earnhardt, but it's how the rules are written up for the complicated qualifying procedures at the Daytona 500.

Man had knife removed from head

Man had knife removed from head
A hospital in southern China says surgeons have successfully removed a rusty, 4-inch knife from the skull of a man who claimed it had been stuck in there for four years. An official at Yuxi City People's Hospital in Yunnan Province said Friday that Li Fuyan, a 30-year-old man, had been suffering severe headaches, bad breath and breathing difficulties but never knew the cause of his discomfort. The official says Li told doctors he had been stabbed in the lower right jaw by a robber four years ago and the blade broke off inside his head without him realizing it. Surgeons worked cautiously to remove the badly corroded blade without shattering it, said the official who would only give his surname. The hospital's website also reported the successful surgery.
